Can cats walk without shoes?
In addition to dressing cats, some owners also dress them in shoes. There is a popular animated film called "The Puss in Boots", which tells the story of a smart cat who is invincible in boots and looks very handsome and free. There didn't seem to be any objections to this matter at first. For example, owners love cleanliness, and some cats like to run around outside. In order to avoid dirtying the house, owners will put shoes on their cats. Sometimes, when a cat's foot is injured, in order to heal, some owners may choose to put shoes on their cat. But is it suitable for cats to wear shoes? Some people stand up and say that cats can't walk after putting on shoes.
Let's think about it carefully, it seems like we've never seen a cat wearing shoes before. There are countless sellers of dog clothes and shoes, but none of them are dedicated to cats. So are cats really not suitable for wearing shoes? Hangzhou Zhangxu Animal Hospital conducted an experiment on the issue of cats wearing shoes.
The experimental subject is a one year old American Shorthair cat named 'Galaxy', who has never worn shoes.
After putting shoes on the cat "Galaxy", as soon as it was placed on the ground, it instantly "petrified" and almost lost its ability to walk. Even its coordination became extremely poor. When walking, it not only made smooth turns, but also accidentally stepped on itself, with comical movements. After 5 minutes, the 'Galaxy' still couldn't adapt.
Is it possible that cats won't walk because their shoes are not the right size? The experimenters wrapped the cat's paws in a towel and tried again. As a result, although the 'Milky Way' became much more natural, it still danced crookedly, constantly shaking its legs, as if trying to get rid of the towel on its paws.
So why then? Generally speaking, people define the outer center space mainly through visual and auditory senses. You can dance and sing with your eyes closed, but when you walk, you may sway and fall. As for touch, people don't seem to use it much, at most they just feel where the wind comes from. From these videos, it seems that cats are different, as they heavily rely on mechanical sensations to perceive the position of the outer center space. This is quite obvious, because it's dark and windy in the middle of the night, and it can't walk without relying on mechanical senses, let alone catching mice.
To be more specific, these cats have 'stuck' something on their bodies, which is different from 'sticking' something. Although the overall behavior of cats is to stay away from the sticky direction, it cannot be analyzed specifically whether it feels that its fur is stuck (different fur receives different vectors with different directions and sizes), or if its skin is subjected to a total pulling force (which is the same vector) and it moves away from this pulling force. Considering that cats will walk on their stomach after sticking adhesive on their backs, and cross over after sticking adhesive on their chests, the movement trend of the adhesive tape relative to the skin is opposite in these two situations (pressing down on the back and pulling down on the chest), but the behavior trend of cats trying to get rid of the tape is consistent. So we can summarize that cats want to stay away from an external object that invades their own central coordinate system.
Cats not only have this reaction to shoes, but also feel uncomfortable if something sticks to other parts of their body.
The experimenters repeatedly stuck the adhesive tape on themselves multiple times to reduce its stickiness, and then applied it to the cat. Sure enough, when the adhesive tape is applied to the abdomen, the cat walks on tiptoe and hunched over; When the adhesive tape is applied to the left and right sides, the cat walks horizontally in the opposite direction; When the adhesive tape is placed on top of the cat's head, it dare not move forward anymore and keeps retreating.
The behavior of cats is very different from that of humans. For example, if a fly is attached to one's body, people will basically feel that it is "the body has been laid on by the fly", rather than "the body has been attached to the world". The cat like reactions to foreign objects such as tape, shoes, etc., especially after the tape is attached to its head and shoes are worn on its feet, we can assume that it feels that there is something wrong with the outer center space, causing it to "step back" or "step over".
Therefore, we can immediately draw a conclusion that cats have certain limitations in their perception of the outer central space, which makes it difficult for them to correctly distinguish the sources of influence exerted on them in the outer central space. When it feels an external force, cannot determine the source of the force, or cannot escape the influence of this force. Then it will think that there is a problem with the entire outer center space, and it will try to solve the problem by leaving this space. So we will see such funny behavior.
Similarly, in a pet hospital, after putting an Elizabeth pen on a cat, the cat will keep retreating and trying to run out of the pen instead of scratching it open. So after putting shoes on the cats, they feel that the outer center space is not right, and it is not difficult to understand why they make those strange actions in order to stay away from external things that invade their central coordinate system.
In addition, researchers have found that paw related reasons may also be the reason why cats do not like to wear shoes. We know that cat pads are one of the sensory organs that maintain balance, and when the pads are wrapped, the cat's balance system will be affected. Normally, when cats walk, they need to extend their paws to grab the ground, put on shoes, and lose the function of their paws. Every hair of a cat is connected to a hair follicle, which is a sensory organ. As long as there is even a slight disturbance, the cat will be alert, so it will not wear clothes
